Types of Chinese

Mandarin

Mandarin is spoken by 960 million people across most of North, West and South China, based on the particular Mandarin dialect spoken in Beijing.  Its written form uses both Simplified Chinese Characters and Traditional Chinese Characters.

Cantonese

Cantonese is spoken by 100 million people from the Guangdong region of Eastern China and in overseas Chinese communities. Its written form uses Traditional Chinese Characters.

Taiwanese

Taiwanese is spoken by 60 million people in Taiwan and further afield. Its written form uses Traditional Chinese Characters.
